Supercalifragilistic. The Show
The Province of Cagliari
Cultural Policies and Sport Office
promotes
Supercalifragilistic (Mistaken Landscapes) - The Show
the presentation of the projects by the artists participating in the residency program LE VILLE MATTE / visual arts, first edition
Former convent of the Capuchins, Villasor (Cagliari, Italy)
16 May – 6 June 2010
Opening: Saturday 15 May 2010, 6.00 pm
Saturday 15 May 2010 in the town of Villasor, a few kilometers from Cagliari, the ten artists that took part in the residency program LE VILLE MATTE – visual arts present their projects. The artists that participated in the program - promoted by the Province of Cagliari – Cultural Policies and that took place form 14 April to 14 May - are: Marika Asatiani (GE, 1977), Augusto Buzzegoli (IT, 1974), Giulia Casula (IT, 1977), Beatrice Catanzaro (IT, 1975), Rita Correddu (IT, 1983), Estelle Deschamp (FR, 1984), Invernomuto - Simone Bertuzzi and Simone Trabucchi (IT, 1983, 1982), Renée Lotenero (US, 1977), Markus Wernli Saito (CH, 1968).
Giancarlo Norese was the visiting professor and Chiara Agnello was the visiting curator.
During workshops and laboratories with the guest artists - invited by Giancarlo Norese - Jiří Kovanda (Prague), Luigi Negro (Lecce), Umberto Cavenago (Milan), Luca Scarabelli (Como) and Mauro Cossu (Cagliari), the participants investigated the issues connected to architecture and landscape, with special attention to the relations existing between the spaces transformed by man and those generated by chance and necessity, as well as to the true nature of debris and to the sounds that dwell and shape a place.
The residency emphasized the importance of the creative processes deriving from the interaction between people, and that of collaborative projects, idea exchange and interaction between the artist and the audience.
Supercalifragilistic (Mistaken Landscapes) - The Show, will be open until 6 June 2010 in the former convent of the Capuchins and in a few public spaces of Villasor. The initiative represents the final step of an intensive process that has led to the creation of permanent installations, projects, temporary interventions, performances and other kinds of works that in many cases have been created in close collaboration with the people of Villasor.
Invernomuto presents an impressive sculptural intervention conceived for the town’s amphitheatre square. The work underlines the social function of a public space usually enjoyed by the young people of Villasor and especially by the skaters’ community. Giulia Casula worked on one of the symbols of the town too, transforming the abandoned water tower into an element capable of stimulating new suggestions. Rita Correddu’s intervention, based in a house in Via Roma, is about the bond of affection for places.
Estelle Deschamp worked on an area near the cemetery placing a sculptural device originating from the observation of architectural elements of house facades.
By inviting the audience to make a wish and choose a colored felt-tip to draw a circle around an hypothetical “wish tree” , Marika Asatiani underlined how her research tends towards the intangible and inexplicable phenomena.
The intervention on the only black wall of Villasor, that is visible from only one privileged view point, is about Augusto Buzzegoli’s intimate experience, while Renée Lotenero’s elaboration of a kitchen tile decoration creates an estranging effect in a private house near the Convent of the Capuchins.
“What would happen if our memory should fade every day?” This is one of the questions that inspired the performative work by Markus Wernli Saito. The intervention that the artist carried out all through the residency weeks, developed along a route across some places in Villasor, like the bar, the newsagent, the post office and the castle, involving the locals and passers-by.
(En)counter Shots is the collective project developed by the ten artists in residence, coordinated by Beatrice Catanzaro. Required by an unusual “client” (a local stockbreeder) the work developed casually, but nonetheless maintaining an extremely traditional character: the work is in fact a great mural on a wall about twenty meters long. The project involved the whole group in a common creative process that led them to an exchange of views and to question their perspectives and opinions.
Supercalifragilistic (Mistaken Landscapes) - The Show is documented in a bilingual catalogue with photos in color published by Kaleidoscope.
LE VILLE MATTE – visual arts is part of LE VILLE MATTE – artist residencies, a wider project with the purpose of offering study and research residencies in Sardinia, stimulating new productions in the fields of music, writing and visual arts.
