MIDA no. zero, Milano 1985

Copie come nuove appena ritrovate in magazzino.

The number zero of the artists' book series by Gruppo MIDA (published in Milano, 1985), an Italian artists collective including Vincenzo Ferrari, Mauro Maffezzoni and myself, that took part to the 42nd Venice Biennale in 1986, invited by Tommaso Trini. A "theoretical book" made by images. B/w print, stapled binding. Some "brand new" copies just found in a storage room.

Italia Happening, Wien

Italia Happening
130 Künstlerbücher

Eröffnung: 18. Februar 2015, 19:00 Uhr

Was passiert, was interessiert im Einzelnen?

Ausstellungsdauer: 19. Februar bis 30. April 2015.

[lines deleted] ... in other words, a nicely curved shoulder is practical (and therefore handsome) while a sunken chest is not (and therefore unseemly). Who says so? Anatomy, Mechanics, and the Laws of Physics.[lines deleted]

Precisely twenty years ago, my friend Luca Giorcelli and I opened Risultati buoni1, a show of works done by four hands. We’d started from medical and veterinary pamphlets we’d found in abandoned rooms at the former Sierotherapy Institute in Milan. We’d taken photographs of certain images taken from books (dogs, horses, tools) and printed exploded views. We’d also monkeyed with the texts, deleting certain parts. The big attraction that lent the show its name was a series of semi-nude women (patients photographed following a hip operation) apparently caught in the act of performing absurd dance steps. An audio track completed the show: short bursts of birdsong accompanied by comments in Russian in a virile man’s voice. With the exception of our girlfriends and a few other friends we’d invited for the inauguration, that show – my very first – received no other visitors.

Contemplation is nothing more than an occasional lapse in that widespread and all-inclusive condition of always having to do some this or that, this and that.2

I purchased my first work of art, a painting, in 1993. I bought it right from the author, an older friend of mine, spending two thirds of what I had in the bank, the equivalent of today’s one thousand euros. The small beautiful canvas rather simply shows a man sitting. Slightly green against a slightly green backdrop. And just what is this slightly awkward man doing? Sitting. He’s evidently chosen a comfortable spot from which to view the world. Now as everyone knows, contemplation is an entirely peculiar activity, given that one’s attention is not focused as much on things as on what they mean. And as Byung-Chul Han3 explains, contemplation is by no means passive; it is, on the contrary, a form of activity of higher level, as well as a much-needed corrective to the somewhat hysterical form of activism (performance) that characterizes this moment in our history. But times are hard for contemplation and contemplators, even in the world of art, where the mere mention of the word suffices to get a roomful of people antsy.

To tell the truth, we’re all clumsy things ourselves. This burden, both detestable and heart-warming, represents our human condition only too well: creatures tottering between animality and culture, the pleasure principle and reality, body and spirit, approximation and fanatical perfectionism. And keeping balance is hardly easy. Particularly stimulating in a work of art, whenever I happen to find it, is the tension between elegance and awkwardness. It cheers me up no end. Also, as many of us have observed, certain gestures can be all the more expressive for their clumsiness. At any rate, ever since the world was born, artists, writers, scientists, and musicians have been bustling around forms attempting to create elegance and bring a bit of order to chaos. They try damnedly hard. That’s entirely understandable. The limit is reached when the form is so tight that all life gets smothered inside.

to repeat: it is the impossibility of eradicating entirely the "arbitrariness", except if one chooses the solution of the monochromes – and maybe not even then – that is at the base of our current mourning of modernism.4

At a distance, I think this show also has something to do (again? perhaps so...) with the so-called death of utopias. Organizing the perfect society, building the new Man – these are the sublime aberrations we’re talking about. Humanity doesn’t really seem to have had much luck with socio-political planning so far. Sooner or later some glitch or side-effect comes up, like gulags. Modernism was another expression of that same exasperated idealism, if but with less horrible consequences. One way or another, Modernist diktats have been safely removed to the attic for some time now. So why, in fact, should any monochrome be deemed more pure than a wanderer looking over a sea of fog?

Here’s the bottom line: what I’m about to say may appear off the subject or at least at odds with what I’ve said above. Bear with me: despite all his fragility, the child commands. Ruthless hunter of lizards, candid self-accuser, powerful improviser – that’s a child. For an adult, the child is a counter-study. And if that’s the case, he can even have a moustache5. A child is a lake an adult can tap for moisture whenever he feels dried up. A child stumbles and trips again, drawing benevolent smiles from adults: he is the one who will be looking after his forefathers.

the archive of forgotten ideas

Sometimes we have ideas that we like but for rational, emotional or practical reasons we think they won’t work out or we aren’t able to develop them at that moment. Consequently we keep them apart, “hide” them somewhere in a peripheral and little attended side of the memory. We use some of them while, through the passage of time, we forget others.

Cecilia Guida asked artists, intellectuals, writers, scientists, economists, etc. to remember an (apparently) forgotten idea and transferred the intuitions and incomplete ideas told to her, into this book.
The ideas are presented in chronological order – relative to the day when they were remembered – and a classifying principle. The archive is both the support and the place that marks the passage of ideas from private to public, from the sphere of the secret to the non-secret. Thus, alongside each idea the e-mail contact of its author is specified, so that every time the archive is shown or exhibited, exchanges of opinions can happen and new collaborations to turn un-used ideas into real projects can be created.

"new (art) order." released Feb., 2013

"a certain number of books." new edition:
2. new (art) order

A comic-book, a parody about the milanese artworld (with e.t. aliens): we commissioned a young novelist to write a story that will be illustrated by 12 different artists. We didn’t want to invite professional cartoonists, but rather some visual artists who often use the technique of drawing in their art practice.
We asked each artist to draw a couple of pages, so that it is one story, but when you leaf through the book every 2 pages has different drawings, as if there were different actors and directors working at the same script.

Giancarlo Norese and Luca Scarabelli (ed. by): "new (art) order."
With drawings by Cuoghi Corsello, Luca Bertolo, Olinsky, Cesare Biratoni, Alvise Bittente, Eva Marisaldi, Pierluigi Calignano, Lisa Rampilli, Marco Vaglieri, Giuliano Guatta, Daniele Giunta, Anna Hilti.
Script by Maurizio Temporin, Igor Della Libera.

Libri d’artista e altri racconti, Gallarate

Museo MAGA, Gallarate
13 ott 2012 - 11 nov 2012

A cura di Lorena Giuranna e Giulia Formenti
Inaugurazione sabato 13 ottobre 2012, ore 18

Saranno esposti libri di Vincenzo Accame, Nanni Balestrini, Vittore Baroni, Carlo Belloli, Mirella Bentivoglio, Angelo Bozzola, Giannetto Bravi, Luciano Caruso, Claudio Costa, Fernanda Fedi, Giosetta Fioroni, Gino Gini, Elisabetta Gut, Arrigo Lora Totino, Stelio Maria Martini, Fabio Mauri, Eugenio Miccini, Anna Oberto, Luciano Ori, Luca Patella, Franco Ravedone, William Xerra.

In collaboration with Careof DOCVA (Milano) and SUPPORTICO LOPEZ (Berlin):
E IL TOPO. eleven issues published between 1992 and 1996.
An idea by Gabriele Di Matteo, Franco Silvestro and Vedova Mazzei, directed by Armando della Vittoria, published by Edizioni Nuovi Strumenti

Based on the involvement and inclusiveness [hence the “E” as the initial conjunction in the title], as well as on the power of a discontinuity in meaning inherent to the image, in only four years (1992-1996) E IL TOPO has prophetically recorded, through the contribution of artists such as Art Club 2000, Massimo Bartolini, Vanessa Beecroft, Maurizio Cattelan, Mark Dion, Dominique Gonzales Foerster, among others, the spirit and attitude of a generation of artists which, at that time, was about to achieve definitive international recognition both by the critique and the public.

E IL TOPO was a synergy catalyst, the feeling of a ferment of a shared practice, anticipating in this sense the experience of relational art; experiences which in recent times we have learned to recognize in very different and complex ways. This magazine was printed in approximately 1000 copies for each issue and it was the result of a series of collaborations that had lead to the encounter among diverse artists. These artists had proposed inedited projects conceived to be fruited through the pages of the magazine, printed in black and white offset on recycled paper. The projects were mixed, overlapped, sometimes hidden, but always showing a completely innovative practice for the moment in which they were being developed. The skilful dosing, the choices, which we would define as curatorial today, and the attitude with which the founding artists have conceived and built the diverse issues composing the magazine give us the possibility of contrasting its actuality and innovative gaze.

But why talk about E IL TOPO today? Because E IL TOPO, after sixteen long years, has decided to leave its lethargy and to get going again to create new issues. Everything started when at the beginning of 2010 Francesco Fossati, a young artist working in Milan, had laid out a new issue of E IL TOPO as an artistic project which was part of his BA thesis at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera.
This project has mobilized a series of activities, which today, almost two years after, allow us to assert that E IL TOPO will be reborn. To reanimate a magazine after sixteen years is not a simple task, each single member of the editorial staff have taken diverse paths, the publishing house, which from the issue number 4 had accompanied the then-young artists in their project, doesn’t exist anymore, and in the meantime the art world, as the world, has inevitably mutated.
From here on, a number of questions and problematics have involved the historic editorial staff of the magazine, which with support of a new team of young artists and curators, has decided to restart the machine.

The first issue of this new edition of E IL TOPO will be realized in a collaborative fashion by the old and the new editorial teams; two generations of artists coordinated by Armando della Vittoria, will result in a sort of handover; because, from the successive issue, it will be only the new team to take over the magazine, under the supervision of the historic director.

Careof DOCVA, Milano, March 2012

Conferenze, incontri e performance:
8 marzo, ore 18.30: Nota. Ho scritto: Pensare alla performance con Lazar Lazar E IL TOPO, performance di Y Liver;

Altre pagine d'artista. 1960–2010

Altre pagine d’artista. 1960–2010
27 maggio e 9 giugno 2010. Centro Artistico Alik Cavaliere, Milano

Intermedia: a generation of artist's books, 1999-2009

O' is pleased to present the first appointment of the INTERMEDIA cycle on September 17; an exhibition of alternative artist's media conceived and curated by Giorgio Maffei along with Die Schachtel, O' and Christoph Schifferli.
Over forty years after the publication of the text “Intermedia” (February 1966) by Dick Higgins in “The Something Else Newsletter,” the curators of this exhibition have borrowed this title which best expresses the need of contemporary culture to 'shuffle the cards,' to break down the strict barriers between disciplines and to consider art and its expressive ways as one singular creative process. The history of 'alternative media' used by artists as an expressive means, equal to more traditional ones like painting and sculpture, conventionally started in the beginning of the nineteen seventies; a period in which the experiments of new poetry came together with the overcoming of pictorial material in conjunction with the development of certain social and cultural factors that determined the transformation of the artist's role and status. This period of maximum expansion of the 'consumer society' and diffusion of mass culture, saw the rise of cultural models which were taking the almost magical and elitist aura the artists had enjoyed until then away from them. Antagonistic society, with tendencies toward demolishing traditional behavior, tried to find a wider accessibility to art, a superimposition of the usual aesthetic categories that still made the division between 'fine arts' and 'applied arts' and the transformation of the inspired and solipsistic dimension of the artist-creator. In this climate, the art market was proposing the idea of the 'multiple' as an object for the masses and to spread the use of intermedia, that is the combination of techniques and expressions belonging to different linguistic spheres. Books and records are the most suitable instruments for taking on this transformation: agile, easy to produce, low cost and more than anything else, they are easily made available to a wide audience which spans class and geography. The artist takes on the whole intellectual and social responsibility of the creation, construction and distribution of the artwork.

The cycle of exhibitions is conceived through themes and segments. A subdivision which is as banal as it is useful to follow the parallel development that the book and the record (as well as video, cinema, theater, dance) have gone through compared to the traditional case study of artistic historiography. The first appointment of the cycle, “ 10 - a generation of artist's books, 1999-2009,” concentrates on the international production of the last decade, exhausting the concept of 'latest generation' and starting instead from the present, contemporary time eventually retracing this thread of history backwards. The exhibit offers, for the first time in Italy, a mapping of the publication of artist's books in the current decade through three parts: one structured around precise curatorial ideas and choices; one dedicated to the Zine Series from Nieves Editions in Zürich, one of the most important independent publishers of artist books; and the third dedicated to the most diverse self-produced artists' publications, collected through direct invitations to the artists and available to be consulted by the public.
For the occasion, a catalogue will be published that will also collect all of the contributions received.
